Challenge
When Cahaba Fire Company (CFC) set out to develop an innovative public safety product, they faced a significant challenge: this product required a large volume of high-durometer rubber with premium mechanical properties. Finding the right material was only the beginning; identifying a manufacturing partner capable of delivering such a specialized solution would be the true test.
The product needed to be four times stronger than conventional materials, yet remain flexible, resistant to extreme heat and chemicals, and durable enough to withstand the harshest field conditions. On top of that, it had to meet stringent public safety standards including NFPA, OSHA, ANSI, and DOT—to ensure the safety of both first responders and the people they protect.
How did the process go?
The FireWedge, a first-of-its-kind public safety product, demanded more than just innovative design, it required precise engineering and manufacturing expertise. CFC engaged Specification Rubber Products (Spec Rubber) to bring this product to life for mass production. Working from the baseline requirements, Spec Rubber was tasked with helping identify suitable materials and manufacturing methods that could meet both performance and compliance expectations. After the Spec Rubber team evaluated various rubber compounds and carefully balanced material properties, manufacturing solutions, and cost, an optimal material was selected. Once the material was finalized, Spec Rubber initiated the prototyping phase to verify that the product could be manufactured at scale with consistent, high-quality results.
CFC’s C-suite, engineering, and sales team worked directly with Spec Rubber’s engineers, manufacturers, and rubber compound specialists to define and meet the FireWedge’s highly specific performance criteria.
Some of the obstacles we overcame included the size, weight, as well as the complex angles and geometry of the FireWedge. Through ongoing collaboration and material testing these challenges were overcome.

Since day one, the FireWedge has been saving lives. Manufactured in the U.S.A. by Specification Rubber Products, Inc., this highly durable elastomeric component meets and exceeds NFPA, OSHA, ANSI, DOT standards. Engineered for performance and reliability, the FireWedge enhances the safety, speed, and efficiency of a wide range of rescue operations.
Used daily by first responders, the FireWedge helps ensure their safety while empowering them to perform life-saving work with confidence.
